The Global Vegetation Team of VITO's Remote Sensing department has expertise in monitoring of agriculture and the natural environment of Africa, at several scales, using in particular spaceborn Earth Observation sensors. This know-how was built up in a range of projects, several coordinated by VITO, which are now brought together to build this platform.
The following projects in particular contribute:
  • Global Monitoring for Food Security (GMFS)
  • A framework for enhancing EO capacity for Africulture and Forest Management in Africa as a contribution to GEOSS (AGRICAB)
  • GEONETCast for and by Developing Countries (DevCoCast) and VGT4Africa
  • Crop monitoring as an e-Agricultural tool for Developing Countries (E-AGRI)
  • Information Service on Agricultural Change (ISAC)

These projects receive funding from the European Space Agency, the European Commission, in particular the Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development, and the Belgian Science Policy Office.

These continuing efforts were of course not possible without collaborating with, contributions from and support by many organisations, in all sectors (international bodies, government, universities, research centres, training centres, NGO, private). This includes the various EU and Africa-based project partners and 200+ user and stakeholder institutes in Africa.
